The main use of hafnium is to make control rods for nuclear reactors. Pure hafnium has plasticity, easy processing, high temperature corrosion resistance, is an important material in the atomic energy industry. Hafnium thermal neutron capture cross-section is large, is an ideal neutron absorber, can be used as atomic reactor control rod and protection device. Hafnium powder can be used as a booster for rockets. Cathodes for X-ray tubes can be manufactured in the electrical industry. The hafnium alloy is used for rocket nozzles and frontal protection for gliding re-entry vehicles, and the HF-TA alloy is used for tool steel and resistance materials. Hafnium is used as an additive in heat-resistant alloys, such as those of tungsten, molybdenum, and tantalum. HfC can be used as carbide additive because of its high hardness and melting point. The melting point of 4TaC·HfC is about 4215℃, which is the compound with the highest known melting point. Hafnium wire, drawn from the metal hafnium.

Hafnium has high melting point and coexist with zirconium, used as cathode of X-ray tube. Hafnium tungsten or hafnium molybdenum alloy is used as electrodes of high-pressure discharge tube. It can be used as getter of many inflation systems. The hafnium getter can remove oxygen, nitrogen and other needless gases existing in the system. Hafnium is also used for nuclear reactor control rods.
